Every week, hundreds of men, women and children seek support from The Salvation Army’s services — William Booth House, Oasis, Foster House and Samaritan House — located in inner-city Sydney. 

After decades of use, these sites of service are no longer sustainable or suitable for delivering the help those facing hardship or crisis seek. Lack of independence and privacy, reduced ability to enforce outreach programs, inability to provide adequate case management, counselling and specialist services, as well as changes to government funding mean these vitally needed facilities are no longer able to function optimally and deliver benefits to those in need, or the city of Sydney’s policies and priorities.  

Your generosity and open-hearted support of the Arise capital campaign can make sure nobody at risk of or experiencing homelessness, living with addiction or escaping family and domestic violence struggles alone. 

The Salvation Army is low risk

The Salvation Army is an iconic Australian charity with national and international presence spanning over 140 years. During this time, The Salvation Army in Australia has demonstrated solid corporate governance, established a strong and sustainable presence with the community, and delivered life changing support to those in need.

To achieve the goals of the organisation’s vision and mission in the years ahead, The Salvation Army is investing in the redevelopment of four mission expressions in Sydney’s Surry Hills. This investment supports The Salvation Army’s principal activities, while maintaining a strong liquid fiscal position entering into a large capital works program.

The Board has taken this and other prudent financial and governance measures to mitigate risk to the organisation’s capital base, thus ensuring The Salvation Army remains in a strong financial position over the years ahead.

The mission expression buildings are not just assets of The Salvation Army — they are assets for the City of Sydney and NSW Government. And with your help, we can ensure they serve all those who need us most. 

Supporting NSW Government policies and priorities

The Salvation Army’s models of care strongly support homelessness and youth homelessness priorities in the areas of effective supports and responses, housing first approach and person-centred approach.

Redeveloped Oasis and Foster House mission expressions will support:

1. Increased focus on addressing early intervention (to keep those vulnerable to crisis and experiencing youth homelessness out of crisis).
2. Improving access to youth homelessness services through investment in and application of evidence-based models of care.
3. Working in partnership to collaboratively address client needs and delivery of an integrated care service.
4. Supporting the homelessness workforce, including youth homelessness specialists.
