From homelessness, to hope and healing

Located in the heart of Sydney’s bustling Surry Hills stands Foster House, a beacon of hope and refuge for men facing the harsh realities of homelessness. More than just a shelter, Foster House embodies The Salvation Army’s unwavering commitment to restoring dignity and providing pathways to brighter futures.

Yet, as the challenges of homelessness evolve, so too must our response. The Salvation Army is ready to revitalize Foster House, aligning with the evolving needs of our community. To meet the growing demands of a changing landscape, we’re embarking on a redevelopment journey that will ensure Foster House remains a beacon of hope, capable of delivering the transformative impact that every person deserves.

Restoring hope in those who need it most

What is Foster House?

What is Foster House?

A Salvos mainstay in Sydney, Foster House is a residential facility located in Surry Hills assisting men aged 18 and over at risk of or facing homelessness.

The site, which has been unchanged since 1990s, provides accommodation, as well as case management, community outreach support, financial assistance, as well as connection and referral to other local specialist services in and around Surry Hills.

What challenges does the site face?

What challenges does the site face?

Built on the old-world approach of communal care, Foster House is a 50-bed residential facility consisting of shared dormitories, bathrooms (including showers), group living and dining areas.

This setup no longer reflects industry best practice methods for upholding privacy, dignity and safety of residents. Additionally, the site is unable to adapt in response to the growing issue of homelessness in Sydney.

What is our plan?

What is our plan?

Your support will help revitalise Foster House to better serve the inner-city community.

A new purpose-built Foster House, with a mix of 50 individual living units and multi-functional communal spaces will ensure we can provide tailored support that upholds the privacy, dignity and safety of those who seek assistance, as well as enhanced case management, counselling, advocacy and referrals to other agencies.

How will this revitalisation benefit the community?

How will this revitalisation benefit the community?

Your generosity has the power to provide hope to those grappling with homelessness. With your support, a modernised Foster House will deliver immediate and long-term benefits for those in need and the wider community.

The renovated facilities will be fit-for-purpose to support men with accommodation in time of crisis, as well as help them in their journey towards permanent housing, access employment and education opportunities, and gain a greater sense of safety, resilience, empowerment and independence, all of which leads to improved social relationships and civic participation.
