About Arise

A revolutionary approach, Arise is The Salvation Army’s response to the growing need for homelessness, family violence, addiction and youth support in the inner-city Sydney area.

This unique opportunity will see us — the Salvos, our corporate partners, philanthropists and governments join forces to create spaces where hope and dignity can be restored for those in need.

Renewing hope for future generations

What is Arise?

What is Arise?

The Salvation Army must urgently redevelop facilities to support those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, living with addiction or escaping family and domestic violence – and we need your help.

With over 230,000 sessions of care provided to those seeking help across our services and programs in NSW between FY2021–2022, the organisation seeks to meet current and future needs of vulnerable people in the inner city through this redevelopment project.

Arise will see the revitalisation of four of our sites in Sydney:

  • William Booth House — addiction recovery service for men and women
  • Foster House — support service for men experiencing homelessness
  • Samaritan House — support for women and children escaping violence
  • Oasis — mission service dedicated to supporting young people

As Australia’s largest provider of homelessness services, with your support, we will be well placed to implement the delivery of a broad suite of programs and services that address a range of complex health and welfare needs.

What is the need?

What is the need?

The last few years have seen The Salvation Army respond to significantly increased need in the communities we serve. From support for homelessness, added assistance for those fleeing family violence, to long term solutions for people striving to move past addiction towards recovery — the need has only grown.

And as we look to the future, more Australians than ever before will seek The Salvation Army for help.

However, the infrastructure in place to service these needs is outdated, insufficient and no longer fit for purpose to implement the new evidence-based models of care that not only help the Salvos serve the community better, but align more closely with policies and priorities of local, state and federal governments.

How will Arise help the community?

How will Arise help the community?

This redevelopment plan has the potential to transform lives and reshape Sydney. The redeveloped facilities at the four sites will be better equipped to respond to the growing numbers of those in need in the inner-city communities.

Additionally, the enhanced infrastructure will facilitate the expansion of community outreach and improve the support provided by The Salvation Army’s proven models of care — resulting in positive immediate and long-term outcomes for those who seek the Salvos for help.

How will Arise benefit Sydney?

How will Arise benefit Sydney?

Over a six-year period, this radical redevelopment plan — along with helping those most vulnerable in Sydney — will offer opportunities to support the circular economy in Surry Hills with employment, discretionary spending, volunteering and business development — a direct result of The Salvation Army’s investment in construction of the new facilities and committing long-term to the local area.

Additionally, once ready, the availability of these sites will reduce presentations to Sydney’s hospitals and community health clinics, occupying fewer health system and police resources — which are already limited, and deliver savings in avoided costs to the City of Sydney and NSW Government in several portfolio areas.

How we help those in need

Homelessness services

The Salvation Army has a long history and strong capacity to respond to the immediate needs of those experiencing or at risk of homelessness around inner-city Sydney.

As one of the leading providers of homelessness services in Australia, we offer not just accommodation, but holistic support that helps people understand and address the causes, and work towards long-lasting solutions.

Youth services

Through bespoke programs that engage youth in need or seeking help, we support them on their journey to independence. We focus on providing pathways that enable a young person to pursue education and job readiness opportunities in fields such as creative arts and multi-media, as well as offering life skills programs, mental health support, youth justice services, counselling and advocacy.

These opportunities, offered in the heart of the inner city, show a young person in our care a path to a better future.

Addiction recovery services

There are many reasons why addictions take hold. The Salvation Army offers a range of services and programs, without discrimination, that enable and facilitate not just recovery from alcohol, drug and gambling addictions, but also access to pathways for a transformed future.

Family and domestic violence

Every person has the right to be safe, empowered and free from violence. The Salvation Army is committed to upholding these rights.

We offer early intervention and prevention services, including accommodation, that focuses on supporting those who have experienced family and domestic violence. At the heart of our work is supporting survivors and their children to feel safe while holding those responsible to account.
